The incredible picture shows Samual reaching out of the womb, ( a miraculous glimpse of life in a mother’s womb), grasping the surgeon’s finger. This image enraged the abortion industry, caused a media scandal, encouraged the pro-life community and ended Clancy’s career as a photojournalist. Clancy’s story was featured in the movie, “The Gift of Life,” and in the book, “Hand of Hope The Story Behind The Picture”

The picture was taken on August 19, 1999, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville Tn., during an incredible procedure to correct spina bifida on an unborn child.  Julie Armas was twenty one weeks pregnant with little Samuel at the time of the procedure. Photographer Michael Clancy captured a remarkable image: The hand of a 21 week-old prenatal baby holding a surgeon’s finger. Clancy thought the photo might win a Pulitzer Prize. Instead, the picture has generated a lot more controversy than awards.

Clancy wanted the picture to be seen by as many people as possible because it provided a miraculous glimpse of life in a mother’s womb. Prior to the photo shoot, Clancy considered a fetus to be purely a part of a women’s body, and felt that if she wanted an abortion, it was nobody’s business but her own. Clancy states that what he saw that day in the operating room changed his opinion immediately.

As a middle-school student in Georgia, too often she feels she “can’t talk about my faith without being told, ‘No.’ I have to learn about other religions in school that I don’t follow, and I can’t even learn about my own religion at school, which really upsets me,” she explains. “It’s not a safe place to me.”

Last year, however—for at least one whole school day—that changed: “Bring Your Bible to School Day,” she says, “was one of the safest days I’ve ever [had] in school. Kids were talking about [Jesus], they were professing the Gospel and I just felt like there was nothing to fear, the light has come in and there was no more darkness.”

Lexie was one of more than 155,000 students nationwide—from kindergarten to college—who participated in the event. Sponsored annually by Focus on the Family, the event empowers students to take their Bibles to school as a visual way to share God’s hope with friends and celebrate their right to free speech.

If a certain party gets elected, this certain party said, if the churches do not agree with our interpretation of women’s reproductive rights, they’ll just have to change their doctrine.

We are at a “precarious moment in our history” when churches must speak truth to power or risk the loss of a lot more than their tax statuses, Ave Maria Law School chaplain Father Michael Orsi said in a blistering speech at a National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children event on September 10. “For too long, pastors and churches have been bullied into believing that they can say nothing political from the pulpit,” said Orsi. The regulation that is used to silence them “was a piece of spite work” against non-profits that had opposed President Lyndon Johnson, he said. “Let me remind you: the Bible is a political document,” the priest said. “The prophets, including John the Baptist, and Jesus, lost their lives because they spoke the truth to power.”

“The Constitution is quickly being destroyed,” warned Orsi, and “unless the right choice is made in November, we may not have a court that is fair and balanced in its interpretation of the Constitution.”

“Too many of the pastors—too many, practically all—in Germany refused to speak against national socialism,” continued Orsi. “And look [at] the result: millions of Jews, pastors, priests, homosexuals, gypsies all lost their lives because everyone was afraid. What are you afraid of, a couple of bucks? Your tax-exempt status? What’s that going to do to you? Your churches may be closed anyway, because if a certain party gets elected, this certain party said, if the churches do not agree with our interpretation of women’s reproductive rights, they’ll just have to change their doctrine.”

Determining the Validity of Attempted Marriage

A civilly-recognized marriage between two men is not really marriage. The Catholic Church certainly would not accept such a union as a marriage. If one of the men left that union, repented and wished to marry a woman, he would not need an annulment, under Catholic canon law.

My colleague Jennifer Johnson jumps from this starting point to explain why we need to have some system in place for determining the validity of attempted marriages. We cannot be the judges of our own case. This would obviously be unfair. The Catholic system, if it is working properly, examines evidence and makes a determination about whether an attempted marriage was valid. Jennifer then wonders whether any other churches have a mechanism for determining the validity of a marriage.

The importance of the law around marriage makes it plain that the government does have some duty in justice to marriage. So, when people say, “Just get the government out of the marriage business,” chances are they have not thought through the whole question of what justice entails. Self-identified Catholics talking about their support for a woman’s decision to safely and legally terminate a pregnancy or have a baby. It could not be further from the truth to call public funding of abortion a Catholic social justice value, García-Siller’s statement said.

García-Siller said he hoped Catholics for Choice “will take the time to acquaint themselves with basic Catholic teachings” and not misrepresent them with “false and inaccurate information and ads that only work to confuse and mislead the public.”

But Catholic bishops and lay leaders have seized on the campaign as an opportunity to rebuke the abortion lobby group that is sponsoring the campaign for falsely characterizing itself as Catholic — and to unequivocally state that “social justice” and “pro-life” values are inseparably united in Catholic social teaching.

The “social justice” tagline is part of the new multiyear “Abortion in Good Faith” campaign conducted by Catholics for Choice, a Washington-based group funded by wealthy donors and million-dollar investments that dissents from Catholic teaching on the inherent dignity of human life. The campaign made its Sept. 12 debut in 20 national and local newspapers, both in English and Spanish.

Police warn that kids could end up bringing edibles to school and sharing them with their friends, unaware of what they really are. So even if they aren’t in your home, your children could accidentally ingest them. “You have little kids that accidentally get into this stuff; they don’t know any better,” said Sgt. Jim Gerhardt of the Colorado Drug Investigators Association. “Or a baby sitter might give a child something out of the pantry, not realizing what it is. Abortion deaths are not counted in the nation’s mortality statistics. When added back in, some astounding conclusions are revealed.

When one considers abortion as a cause (of death), it is almost equivalent to the government’s top two causes combined! Using estimates for 2009 from the Guttmacher Institute, Studnicki and colleagues calculate that the 1,152,000 deaths from abortion easily make it the nation’s leading cause of death, responsible, when added back in, for almost a third (32.1%) of all the deaths recorded that year. Abortion is by far the leading cause for Hispanics (death), responsible for 64% of deaths, and for blacks, at 61.1%– close to two out of every three deaths experienced by these communities.

No disease, no kind of violence comes close to having the impact on these communities that abortion does. Not only lives are lost, but years of creativity, productivity, and love.

But if the figures are telling us that abortion is, by far, the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, (thus) wouldn’t the prevention of abortion represent one of the best possible uses of our time, resources, and efforts?

Is she too Pro-life? Donald Trump’s new campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, is a longtime pro-life activist who has advised Republican and pro-life groups on messaging. In 2015, she called using the Planned Parenthood baby body parts videos a “shock the conscience, warm the heart” tactic to convert people to the pro-life cause. She has conducted surveys for Students for Life of America and spoken and participated in a plethora of pro-life events.
